Living Torah was launched in 2001. We remember vividly watching in shock from the JEM office on Eastern Parkway as the twin towers collapsed. It was just as we were completing the very first Living Torah video. We said to each other then, and we believe so now, that the world would never be the same. The project we were launching would play a major role in illuminating the darkness that that life-changing event wrought.

Living Torah quickly became about public viewings. Synagogues, community-wide events, classes in and out of schools the world over, made Living Torah videos a weekly event.

Today over 650 public Living Torah viewings are held regularly across the globe.

In 2003, Living Torah upgraded to DVD. While some of our constituents objected since they did not as yet own DVD players, we were aware of the many advantages: Multiple audio tracks, subtitle languages, and instant access to every clip. We knew we had to lead the way forward.

In 2010, in conjunction with Chabad.org, Living Torah online was launched, granting web access to all of Living Torah.

An update is planned for first quarter of 2014, bringing the advantages of the app to the Living Torah online interface.

A well-known saying in the business world is, "Good is the enemy of great."

When you're onto something good - a project that has been widely hailed as innovative, life-giving, the best invention since sliced bread - it may seem unwarranted to take a step back and say, "How can we make this even greater?"

But that's precisely what we've done. Strategy sessions, consultations, brainstorming, and old-fashioned dreaming has led us to totally reinvent Living Torah.

After envisioning this massive project we ran the numbers, and realized that substantial funding would be needed to bring our ideas to fruition. Two major donors - Rabbi Yitzchok Michaan of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and an anonymous donor––gave generous seed grants to enable us to get the project off and running.

At the heart of the Living Torah app is its metadata. The ability to search by topic, keyword, date, and more, is what makes our 2,000 clips so readily accessible.

To achieve this we built a metadata tree from the ground up. Thousands of hours were invested into tagging and structuring the metadata. Many all-night sessions were spent building, rebuilding, working and reworking the keyword system until it was perfected.

To sum it up, the Living Torah experience has been completely transformed, putting all the control into your hands.
